A Little About Me
Wassup, I’m Déja, the founder of The Coil, just a Black girl with thick hair from the Bronx who grew up with a hairstylist mom. You’d probably think that meant I always knew exactly what to do with my hair or that figuring out my hair was easy—but honestly, it took me a while to figure out my own natural hair.
For me, one of the hardest parts was finding products that actually worked. There are so many products out there, and sometimes it felt like I had to buy and try a million things just to figure out what my hair liked. Once I started finding the right products, I realized how much easier taking care of my natural hair could be.
My hair journey became even more personal when I was diagnosed with lupus. At one point, I experienced hair and eyebrow loss because of it. Losing my hair was hard, and it made me look at my hair and my overall haircare routine differently. I started learning more about my hair, being more intentional about how I cared for it, and focusing on helping it grow back as healthy as possible.
That experience is a big part of why I created The Coil.
I know what it's like to stand in a store looking at all the different products and wondering, “Okay...but which one am I actually supposed to get?”
I wanted to create The Coil for people like me—people who love their natural hair but might still be figuring out what works for them. A place where you can discover new products, find new favorites, and re-up on products you already love without having to do all the searching yourself.
Having curls and coils can be beyond frustrating sometimes so I just want The Coil to make caring for your hair feel a little easier and a lot more fun.
